Christmas Day: Navidad in Peru

  • Most poeple in Peru set up Nativity scenes and preform dances an plays. They also cook typical foods. Most people buy their Nativity scenes at the Santurantikuy (the buying of Saints).
  • This is held at the Plaza de Armas on December 24th. At this market farmers also sell plants and mosses. Families will keep their nativity sets up till January 6 when the three wise men came to Jesus.
  • People go from church to church to see different Nativity sets and hear different choirs. People here exchange gifts on Christmas Eve which seems a little early to me.
  •  Wealthy families eat turkey while other families eat chicken.
  • Chruches and communities down here have times when  better off families give poorer children hot chocolate and maybe some gifts. The poorer families sleep on the streets to be able to attend these events.
  • They also do things that we do in the West. They have Christmas trees, Santa Clause, and Father Christmas. In this picture you see the very pretty christmas tree and festivities in Peru.
